ERROR ANALYSIS WORKSHEET

1) The characteristics of an ideal university are offering opportunities for qualified education, settlement, free transportation, low-cost living conditions, employment opportunities after graduation, chance to socialize and being a barrier-free campus.

2) I am happy, because being a student at METU means learning how to survive in a society as an individual. Since METU gives its students a sense of responsibility in every field by letting them do everything on their own such as registration, taking courses or following assignments, everybody in METU learns the meaning of responsibility for all the things they do from the courses they take to various activities they engage in.

Nato says it will consider "without delay" Turkey's request to deploy Patriot anti-missile systems to protect its border with the unrest-torn Syria.
The comments were made by the military bloc's chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Germany's foreign minister has already said the request by Turkey, a Nato member, should be approved.
On several occasions last month, Turkey's army returned fire across the border into Syria after Syrian mortar shells landed inside its territory.
The exchange of fire followed the deaths of five Turkish civilians in Syrian shelling.
'Exposed to attacks'
On Wednesday, Mr Rasmussen said he had received a letter from Turkey - a Nato member - to deploy Patriot missiles.
He said such a move would "augment Turkey's air defence capabilities" and "contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis along Nato's south-eastern border".
Patriot batteries use radar to locate incoming missiles. Surface-to-air missiles are then launched from giant containers and are guided onto their targets.
The system has been extensively used by the US and allied troops since it was first deployed in 1986. It has previously been deployed in Turkey during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said he had instructed the country's ambassador to Nato to approve Ankara's request for a further deployment of the system.
"It would be a serious mistake if we were to refuse defensive support to a Nato member country in a moment when this member country feels that it is exposed to attacks from outside," Mr Westerwelle said.
Until last year, Turkey and Syria were close allies, but Ankara is now backing the Syrian opposition and calls for the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad.
While Turkey may not be at war with Syria, correspondents say it is now increasingly involved in its neighbour's conflict.
Turkey has a 900km (560 miles) border with Syria

Journal Entry 4- METU ENLIGHTENS YOU

METU' s latest slogan ' I Brain Metu ' is a nice choice; however, it lacks reflecting the spirit of METU which is successfully displayed in the video. To begin with, what the video emphasizes is the climate of METU which coaches people in expressing themselves and thinking freely. The video focuses on what METU does or succeeds while the slogan deals only with the name of METU superficially. To elaborate, one might find the slogan 'I Brain METU' meaningless if he/she does not watch the video. Another question to be answered is the word 'ODTÜ' in the slogan, The name of the university is written in Turkish though the slogan is intended to be in English, and this situation might puzzle people at the first glance. However, i cannot be pessimistic about the slogan so much, because people seem to be content with it. We can understand this from their desire to use the materials with the slogan written on them such as t- shirts, pens, tea cups…
While thinking on a slogan which would fully reflect my ideas about METU , the sentence ‘ METU ENLIGHTENS YOU’ popped up in my mind. After thinking in details I found this one more suitable, because it can convey the message that  if a person wants to improve himself/herself intellectually and go further in understanding the world in all aspects without being affected any ideological views, METU is the right choice.Additionally , none of the slogans would be enough to explain what METU is like due to its multi-faceted environment. Everybody has something which appeals to them in METU, so everybody has the right to create their own slogan according to the concept of METU in their mind.In conclusion, i can say that, if you are at METU, the only thing you need is an unbiased mind, METU will give you the rest.

ERROR CORRECTION SHEET

 1. When ı first heard that ı had been accepted to Middle East Technical Unıversity, ı was disappointed. Because ı did not like Ankara as a city. But my opinions have changed over time dramatically. Because Middle East Technical Unıversity is really a different world in Ankara.
2. It has been only one month since I came here. But I got used to this environment. Because, first of all, people from all of ages in here respect to each other.
3. I love Ankara,I love my dormitory,I love my new friends, I love my department, (!) I am content with everything which are belongs to METU.
4. If someone wants to walk , he or she can go and walk. And it is nice place to go and meet with my friends
5. We can easily see this by watching TV,surfing on the internet or maybe just looking around us.Because there are many people getting graduated from different kinds of universities but they're not even able to know what's going on around them or they don't even try to find good ways to improve the countries yhat they live in.

Detailed explanation: ‘ı’ should be written in capital letters. The Word ‘was’ should be used instead of ‘had been’, because when saying had been it means as if somebody else informed about that incident. The words ‘because’, ‘but’ and ‘and’ should not be used at the beginning of a sentence, they should be connected to the previous sentence with a comma.’As a city’ is not a proper usage. The Word ‘opinions’ should be used in singular form,  because the writer mentions only one idea. The correct spelling for ‘unıversity’ is ‘university’. ‘People from of all of ages’ is not a correct usage. It is wrong to us ‘in’ before here, so is ‘to’ after respect. In the third sentence, there are many sentences , so there should be used a connector to make a unified paragraph. It is wrong and unnecessary to use ‘are’ before the verb ‘belongs’. Saying ‘to go and…’ is a colloquial expression..( 4th paragraph). ‘Gettin graduated’ should be used as ‘graduating’. In academic writing ‘don’t, what’s, they’re are not accepted. We should use the complete form of all words. Lastly, it is obvious that the writer wrote the word ‘that’ as ‘yhat’ by mistake. A corrected edition of the text is as below:

1. When I first heard that I was accepted to Middle East Technical University, I was disappointed , because I did not like Ankara. However,  my opinion has changed dramatically over time, because Middle East Technical University is really a different world in Ankara.

Journal Entry 3 : MY IDEAL UNIVERSITY

The university period in one's life can be the most fabulous and productive times providing that the university has the characteristics of an ideal university. A well organized educational institution is a golden opportunity for the individuals who want to build a brilliant future and have a desirable career.

There are three criteria for a university to fulfil its mission properly and become an ideal university. To begin with, a university should be able to provide its students with necessary resources and facilities to make a thorough and successful research. For instance; well equipped laboratories, libraries which are satisfactory in terms of the accesibility to books and diversity in the topics of the books and commodious study halls are the factors making a university preferable. Another characteristic of an ideal university is being sociable and encouraging the students to take part in events by offering them various types of  societies and sports activities. Among the activities that a university should draw its students in sports teams , dance&theatre clubs and youth clubs such as the psychology or economics societies are the most essential ones. The last and the most crucial feature which a university  should have is the proficiency in instructing the grad students to find a suitable job according to their department. To illustrate, universities can make agreements with companies or public institutions   in order to increase the students' employment opportunities. In addition, the implementations in recruitment will help the students be involved in the appropriate segment of  business world so that they will be doing the job they like.

Considering these three criteria of a desirable university, I can undoubtedly say that METU is the reflection of the perfect university in my mind. Both in terms of having the necessary equipment for studies and offering a wide range of social activities, METU administration does his job very well and goes on improving regarding what the age necessitates.
